Stanford
Wong
Stanford Wong is the author of many celebrated works regarding
blackjack and the strategy therein. His book, “Basic Blackjack,”
is considered by many to be “the” book on basic blackjack
strategy and includes strategies for most of the rule variations
used in casinos throughout the world. His introduction to
card counting, “Blackjack Secrets,” as well as “Professional
Blackjack,” in which he presents the Hi-Lo and Halves counting
systems, are equally lauded.
Born in Georgia during the Second World War, Wong always loved
playing games and, especially, learning and dissecting their
rules. It was while reading Edward Thorp’s book, “Beat the
Dealer,” in 1963, that Stanford Wong realized there might
be a way for him to figure out strategies to help beat the
casinos in blackjack.
When he was 21 and old enough to enter the casinos legally,
Wong put his strategies to work and successfully was able
profit financially therein. After receiving his PhD, Wong
realized he was making more money playing blackjack than teaching
classes so he switched to playing blackjack and writing and
researching the game full-time. During his research, Wong
made many trips to Asia to study the game further, later incorporating
the findings into his writings. |
