Humble
Before becoming involved with blackjack, Lance Humble, PhD
was a Professor at York University in Toronto, in 1973,
teaching a course on the Aspects of Gambling. Although
his course mostly involved horse racing, Humble became interested
in the study of casino games, as well.
After reading books on the
strategies of blackjack, he went to Las Vegas to test his
luck. When he ultimately came home a big winner, he became
convinced, like Julian Braun and Edward Thorpe before him,
that there had to be a mathematical strategy for beating
the house. And Humble was determined to figure out how.
After intense research and practical study, Humble authored
the book, "Blackjack Gold," in 1976, which is still viewed
by many as helping further the work of the celebrated mathematician
and blackjack expert Julian Braun.
In addition to authoring (with Kenneth Cooper) the celebrated
book, “The World’s Greatest Blackjack Book, “ Humble is
the founder of two of the most famous card counting systems
in the world: the Hi-Opt. 1 (focusing around the importance
of the 10 card) and Hi-Opt. II (a more complex strategy).
Humble was also a frequent columnist for the magazine, “Gambling
Times.”
